“Guess who else is dyslexic?!?!”

Back to school this week, which means back to tutoring sessions for my amazing students. Happy to hear about their Christmas Break adventures and fun re-tellings. Yesterday, one of my middle schoolers who LOVES to chat about all things says, “Oh! I have something I really want to tell you, guess who else is dyslexic?” He goes on to tell me how he discovered Tom Holland is dyslexic too.

This brings me such joy to have one of my students realizing their unique brain wiring is something to celebrate! Much of the work I’m doing with my students is to help them APPRECIATE their uniqueness. In December, my husband, a dyslexic learner himself and a mechanical designer sent me a screenshot of the work he does. As I shared it with my tutor students that week, I told them my non-dyslexic brain can’t begin to make sense of this drawing. My favorite response was from a precocious 8 yo student of mine who with all the confidence of a superhero, “I can totally understand this drawing!”. Does he? I love that he has confidence either way.

Helping my students to embrace their amazingly different way of thinking is as much my life’s work as equipping them with the tools they need. As I’ve heard my own husband self report the hits his self image took over the years with his dyslexia, it’s become a personal mission of mine to reverse as many of those negatives the best I can.

My Resources tab will take you to some great books that call out and celebrate many famous dyslexics in the past and in present in all kinds of fields that would be sure to capture the interest of virtually anyone. I regularly gift these books at Christmas for my students. I hope you find great value in these resources as I and many of my studetns have.
